My family with Aunty Betty (sitting second from left) in Vilna, 1928

Project Aims

Aims
The aim of this project is to produce a weblog and ultimately a documentary which contributes to the following two educational themes:

  • Education in the modern Jewish diaspora, the immigration of Jews in the first half of the Twentieth Century. The spreading of Eastern European Jews to The Americas, Great Britain, South Africa and Israel accelerated from the end of the 19th Century onwards. I aim to give an overall impression of this phenomenon through the personal story of our family who weren't writers, musicians or politicians. They were just ordinary people.
  • Education in the holocaust in the Baltic countries. This part of the shoah story remains comparatively lesser known than, for example, destruction camps such as Auschwitz. Through my research I've come across a recent tendency in these countries to trivialise the holocaust. There are attempts to muddy matters, playing down the attrocities committed against the Jews and accentuating claims of attrocities committed by Jewish partisans. This worrying trend can be seen particularly in Lithuania and includes the harassment by the authorities of Jewish partisans living in Lithuania who survived the Second World War.

Fund
I aim to complete this project within the coming two to three years. To do that in this time frame the project and the research that goes into it needs external funding. This is why I have set up a fund, "The Aunty Betty Project Fund", to help finance the activities and attract extra funding needed to realise these goals. Any donation, however large or small, would be extremely welcome.
